One of the main tourist regions of Portugal, Albufeira, does not need an introduction. Situated in the centre of Algarve, the southernmost region of Portugal, Albufeira has a privileged location, being the best starting point for excursions or visiting other places.
With a coastline of about 30 kilometres, divided into 25 beaches of fine sand and crystalline waters, the area boasts of one of the largest concentrations of blue flags (European symbol of the quality of beaches). In addition, the city is renowned for the wide range of activities and entertainment, as well as its nightlife, which is the most famous throughout the entire Algarve.
Albufeira offers its visitors not only one of the best beaches on the south coast of Portugal. It is also a holiday destination par excellence with a variety of attractions and places to visit.
Torre do Relógio (Clock Tower): It is a tower from the 19th century, with an iron crown which supports the bells and illuminates on bright days.
São Vicente de Albufeira:The San Vicente Monument is located in the Plaza Jacinto d'Ayet and commemorates the monk Vicente de Santo António.
Igreja Matriz (Mother Church): This church replaced an old church, destroyed in the earthquake of 1755. The new one is located at Rua da Igreja Nova and was built in 1782, however the consecration took place only in 1800 by Bishop of Algarve, Francisco Gomes de Avelar. It has a strong, neo-classical style.
Torre Sineira (The Bell Tower): It is a tower, which complements the Mother Church, and was built in 1869. The tower measures 28 meters of height and its top can be accessed by a staircase, to admire its majestic belfry of eight bells.
Capela da Misericordia: Originally, this chapel had Arab features, but in 1499 it was converted into a shrine. The earthquake of 1755 forced another reconstruction, but it maintained Gothic features. Currently it is located at Rua Henrique Calado.
Edificio da Antiga Albergaría (The Building of the Old Shelter): It was one of the buildings that withstood the earthquake. It was used primarily for travellers to find shelter during the night and also to help beggars.
Igreja de São Sebastião (The San Sebastian Church): This Baroque church dates back to the 18th century. It has rich architectural forms of popular inspiration. What stands out about this church is its dome and the two portals.
Muralha do Castelo (The Castle Wall): It is one of the few relics of the Castle Wall that can be seen, and it is located at Rua Joaquim Pedro Samora.
Arco da Travessa da Igreja Velha: This arch is a beautiful and clear reference to the Arab culture and it can be admired in the Travessa da Igreja Velha.
Porta de Sant'Ana: This is one of the castle gates which also served as the passage to the chapel. After the 18th century the worship of Sant'Ana has taken place in the present church of St. Anne.
For those who would like to learn about the art of Albufeira, two art galleries are available:
Galería Municipal: It is open every day, except Sundays and public holidays.
Galeria do Pintor Samora Ramos: Since 1926 it was a Power Plant. After some reconstructions and changes, in 1988 it became an art gallery. Its tiles and motifs are the job of the painter Samora Barros. Like the National Gallery, it is open daily, except Saturdays and Sundays.
El museo de Arqueología de Albufeira (The Museum of Archaeology of Albufeira): If there is an obligatory visiting point for tourists coming to Albufeira, it will be the Museum of Archaeology, where you can find the best historical record of the region. The entrance is free of charge. The museum is closed on Mondays and public holidays.
Zoo Marine: It is the most famous theme park of Albufeira, perfect to spend time with the family. The visitors of the Marine Zoo can watch the pirouettes of dolphins and seals and take a look at different types of animals, from sharks to colourful birds.
Zebra Safari: This safari will take you to the most interesting places and the most beautiful landscapes of Algarve.
El mirador de Pau Bandeira. This magnificent viewpoint is located in the Barrio de los Pescadores - Fishermen district - and is a great place to admire the views of the old part of Albuferita.

El mirador de Malpique: From here you will be able to see the whole city and the sea. It is located at the Rua António Aleixo street.
El mirador Bem Parece: From this viewpoint you can admire the picturesque, wild cliffs, caves and tunnels that can be reached from the beautiful beaches.

Playa de los pescadores: one of the most famous beaches of Algarve is known for its calm waters. It became the favourite beach of families. The sand is white and the beach proudly boasts of the blue flag.
Playa de Falésia: very popular, features many shopping centres. Despite being one of the largest and most popular beaches of Algarve, its water is very clean. It has a fine sand and the water temperature is quite warm during the summer.
La Playa de Salgados: it is one of the most exclusive beaches of Albufeira. It is surrounded by modern hotel resorts, all kinds of shops, golf courses as well as one of the most important sport clubs of Algarve. And those who prefer the nature can visit a unique viewpoint to observe the birds, which is located in the neighbourhood.
La Playa de Santa Eulalia: it offers all kinds of services. The sand has golden colour and the water temperature is warm.
La Playa de Coelha: offers all the basic services, however, it is not the most visited beach of Albufeira, which makes it a perfect choice for those, who prefer to sunbathe and relax without a company of crowds. This beach also stands out for its clean waters. In the Coelha Beach the restaurants and hotel facilities have a typical, traditional style.
La Playa de Oura: it is undoubtedly one of the busiest beaches of Albufeira and Algarve. It is considered a hot spot among young people, due to the fact that it offers all kinds of shops (from restaurants to beach bars) and services.
La Playa de Rocha Baixinha Leste: it is known for its calm waters and plenty of traditional, small businesses and services. This beach is one of the cleanest and safest ones in the whole Albufeira (with the blue flag and lifeguards available at all times), perfect for families.
La Playa de Inatel: despite not having a large choice of shopping centres and hotels, it is one of the busiest beaches. Simply, because many tourists prefer the comfort and tranquillity that this beach has to offer. Inatel Beach is an excellent place for walking and touring, as is surrounded by a set of caves.
Albufeira has a Mediterranean climate: hot, dry summers and mild winters, with reduced rainfall between the months of October and March, with an average annual temperature of 17.5°C.
In Algarve, just like throughout entire Portugal, one of the greatest pleasures starts at lunchtime. The Portuguese cuisine is wide and the restaurants are varied.
The typical dish of Algarve is the cataplana, a kind of steam-cooked stew with fish and vegetables, prepared in a small, closed, metal pot.
Other star specialties of Algarve consist of grilled meats and fish. The most typical fish are sardines, carapaus (mackerel) or sea bream; and the favourite meats are pork and lamb.
Codfish, so typical in other parts of the country, is not so popular in the Algarve area; However, many restaurants offer some of the most common dishes including this fish. It is also an ingredient of one of the day dishes - cod salad with chickpeas.
The charming towns of Algarve dazzle their visitors with wonderful beaches and a wide range of evening entertainment.
The most animated nightlife is concentrated within two areas: “The Strip” with the traditional nightclub Kiss, and the “Old Town” area, which being a rather quiet zone during the day, becomes full of entertainment options for all tastes after the sunset.
At the beginning of the summer young people feel like in heaven, when the city proposes attractive offers of nightly entertainment, like concerts and live music shows.
The karaoke lovers can enjoy themselves in many pubs and clubs located in the "Old Town" area. Meanwhile, tourists and locals fans of electronic music, will find the best entertainment options on The Strip. And if you want to experience the best of the Albufeira night, do not forget to take your friends to the Linekers a renowned bar, attracting the most beautiful people!
