Tavira is one of the main tourist destinations in the region of Algarve, situated in southern Portugal. Thanks to its pleasant climate and sunny days throughout the year, it is a favourite place for a beach holiday.
Good beaches, great atmosphere and even a natural reserve make Algarve and Tavira ideal destinations for families.
Our route starts in the city of Tavira, where we can take a lovely stroll through its narrow, cobbled streets and the Roman footbridge, under which the fishermen seek clams at low tide.
During our walk through Tavira, we should not miss la Praça de la República, the Misericordia church, the Santa Maria do Castelo church or the castle, which offers beautiful views.
Albufeira, with the Clock Tower being the point of reference, is worth seeing too. It is best to discover the city on foot, walking along the old town where you will discover the Matriz church and the ruins of the ancient wall.
If you wish to visit less known places, Santa Luzia or Cacela Velha, are worth a note – quiet, charming places. You can also head for adventure and discover the best of the Portuguese south.
In Tavira one cannot miss the Tavira Island beach, which can be accessed only by boat. The fare is cheap and definitely worth it. Its large size offers lively zones as well as silent and quiet spaces.
The Cabanas Beach is also another obligatory point of visit. Being located in a natural area, it keeps the nature intact, which gives it a special charm.
If you wish to take the car and visit other beaches in the region, the recommended ones are: the Tunnel beach or the Peneco beach, the playa de los Pescadores beach or the beach of Inatel – all of them located in Albufeira.
More special beaches, where one can enjoy more of the nature rather than sunbathing are located in Grottos en Lagos, the Cape of San Vicente or Arrifes and Sao Rafael.
Albufeira has an ocean climate, with mild temperatures without extremes. In winter, although the sun is also present, the temperatures are usually more extreme. Rainfall is concentrated in November and December.
Fish and seafood are certainly the best specialties of Algarve - fresh products that are present in everyday cooking. The highlights are for sure clams and grilled fish, as well as the cataplana, a typical fish-based stew with vegetable.
If you visit Santa Luzia, the octopus is the specialty of the house.
As a perfect addition to these dishes, a glass of vino verde is a must - with sweet taste, little alcohol and served cold. Enjoy.
Algarve offers the best parties and atmosphere you may wish for. Albufeira features lively pubs and discos, where parties are more lively and loud. Tavira, though, is peaceful and quiet with nice bars and pubs.
You will definitely find what you are looking for.
In Tavira the celebrations of the Palm Sunday are worth mentioning, where the Roman bridge is specially decorated with lavender, through which the procession passes.
Similarly, in June the Popular Saints festival is celebrated, when the streets are decorated with grilled sardines and their flavour runs through the town. Party and the Portuguese folklore are what matters these days.
In May Tavira welcomes the “Gastronomía del Mar” (“Cuisine of the Sea”) festival, where tradition merges with innovation in many fish-based dishes.
This fish certainly is the greatest protagonist of many festivals. Olhos d 'Agua in August celebrates the Festival of the Sardine, when it is usually enjoyed grilled.
