Mérida, capital of Extremadura, lies to the north of Badajoz, very near the center of the region. The rivers Guadiana and Albarregas run through it and it has a vast range of sights to visit. It makes it a tourist landmark of the community of Extremadura worldwide, thanks to its archaeological and monumental importance, for which it was declared a World Heritage Site in December 1993. Subsequently Mérida was declared a "Historical and Archaeological Site," the only city in Spain to hold this title.
It can be said that in Mérida, every historical epoch has left its mark forming all its characteristic architecture, for example, its buildings and monuments, and today this means the whole of his great archaeological heritage, arranged for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations who want to visit.
The Roman Theatre of Mérida was opened between the years 15-16 b. C. and was built by the consul Marcus Agrippa. The most spectacular part of the theater is just attached to the front of the scene, with marble columns. Between these two columns we can find a series of sculptures that complement the decor: Ceres , Pluto, Proserpina and the odd statue in toga and another in armor, which have been interpreted as imperial portraits.
Very near the Roman Theatre is the Roman Amphitheatre. This building was dedicated mainly to shows with gladiators and wild animals. It was inaugurated in year 8 b.C. and consisted of a capacity for 14,000 spectators.
The Museum of Roman Art is located in front of these two, it was opened in 1986 and designed by architect Rafael Moneo Vallés.
The Hotel Blue Diamond City Mérida Palace is a monument, since it is located in two of the most iconic buildings of the Plaza de España, dating back to the sixteenth and nineteenth century. The Palace of the Mendoza combines in its facade the Renaissance with late Gothic and has an arcaded courtyard from the nineteenth century. The Palace of the Pacheco, built in 1802, houses an Arab neo-Mudéjar patio which gives plenty of light and spaciousness to the interior. The prestige of this elegant castle has been enlarged for hosting famous guests as Queen Elizabeth II, Alfonso XII and Alfonso XIII.
Casa del Mitreo is a Roman manor house, located in the same location as the Mithraic sanctuary, hence its name. Here stands out the "Cosmological Mosaic" which is one of the most important and interesting of those who have appeared in the Peninsular West.
Another option is to visit the Circus, also called the Hippodrome. It is thought that may have been built in the first century AD and had a capacity of 30,000 spectators, making it one of the largest in the Roman world.
The Aqueduct of San Lazaro or of the oxtail was built thinking on how to save the Albarregas River floods, and also of conducting underground water catchments. The Aqueduct led this water through two branches to the area of the Theater, the Amphitheater and the city center, it was about 1,600 meters long and 16 meters high.
The Aqueduct of Miracles (Acueducto de los Milagros) was built to carry water brought from the Proserpina lake reservoir to the city, it was about 830 meters long and 25 meters high.
La presa de Proserpina es el embalse creado de manera artificial en la época romana de mayores dimensiones conocido en el mundo Mediterráneo.
The Proserpina Dam is the largest artificially created reservoir from the Roman times lknown in the Mediterranean world. The Arch of Trajan is one of the monuments most popular among visitors. It is 15 meters high and the date of its construction is unknown. It was discovered in an excavation that took place in the eighteenth century.
he Temple of Diana was devoted to the imperial cult in the first century b.C. It is preserved thanks to the wonderful restoration that was done on it in the sixteenth century. Its structure was used to build the Palacio del Conde de los Corbos (Palace of the Counts of Corbos), in Renaissance style.
Mérida has a Mediterranean climate of the semi- contimental variant, with some Atlantic influx, as it is located very close to the coast of Portugal, and this makes the temperatures here tender, not as extreme as those of other inland places.
It has mild winters (temperatures rarely fall below 0°C ) and a hot dry summers (temperatures can reach 40°C). Rainfalls are fairly rare and precipitations are around 450 mm - 500 mm per year.
As for the humidity level, it is quite low, as is the wind, which is virtually nonexistent. Mists sometimes appear in autumn and winter.
Mérida's cuisine is based on traditional products offered by nature, be that plants or animals.
As for the typical dish, and a prestigious one, we can mention the gazpacho or ajoblanco, made out of the following ingredients: oil, water, garlic and bread, but in the case of ajoblanco there would be an ingredient that makes the difference and gives an exquisite touch: the almonds.
The lamb stew: one should know that "stew" is the name given to different traditional dishes from Spain. They are based on water, oil and / or wine with the addition of meat or fish and vegetables.
Other typical dishes are the cojondongo (very typical of the summer, and has its origin in the "Macarraca," a dish eaten mid-morning on hot days), migas extremeñas, zorongollo (a typical salad from Extremadura which is made with tomatoes and roasted peppers and later flavored with their own juices, and olive oil and garlic), the jilimojas (retinta beef seasoned with pepper), or cardincha de paleta made from sheep.
We should also mention that the hotels Blue Diamond City Mérida Palace and BlueBay City Las Lomas Mérida have an exquisite selection of food, both local and international, and can thus satisfy all types of clients that can come to our facility.
A typical dessert are "perrunillas" which are a type of biscuit made with flour and eggs, sugar, brandy, butter and a touch of cinnamon, and then there are the famous "moñitas" from Extremadura that are a little chocolaty cake.
For the lovers of wine tourism, we recommend the Viña Santa Marina where you can participate in various wine tastings, with the varieties to work with including Petit Verdot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Syrah, Merlot and Viognier. We should also highlight the designation of origin belonging to the area called "Ribera del Guadiana," which includes wines like Canamero, Ribera Alta, Ribera Baja, Montanchez and Tierra de Barros y Matanegra.
The area is also characterized by the development of traditional products such as hams and pork shoulders from the Iberian acorn pig raised in the pastures of Extremadura, or cheese with denomination of origin La Serena.
All around this land framed in the Roman Empire, we can also find all sorts of places to go out for a drink.
For jazz lovers, we recommend visiting Jazz Bar Mérida, where you can enjoy this music and spend a nice evening, since it's totally focused on jazz. This bar also offers cocktails and imported beer, leaving no one indifferent. It is located near the Arch of Trajan.
Other clubs where to have a drink to be named are Dakar, which is located right next to the dam of Proserpina, or Raw Club Café which is situated about 500 meters from the river Guadiana, and 350 meters from the Hotel Blue Diamond City Mérida Palace. Other bars in the vicinity of the hotel are Café Bar España and Bar Jauja, both located in the same square.
For a younger public, we recommend to visit the Youth Hostel "El Prado" with concerts of all kinds held in a clearing on the banks of the Guadiana River.
For the karaoke lovers, there are H. Robert Karaoke and Karaoke Melodía, both in the John Lennon street, very close to the hotel, where a night of laughter is guaranteed.
The most important local celebrations take place during the Mérida Roman Carnival in February . The origins are not entirely clear but it is known that these festivities were celebrated since before the twentieth century, although it is early in this century that the evidence of the first municipal rules of the carnival celebration in the city dates back to.
The Holy Week in Mérida in March-April has been declared of national tourist interest. Another event worth mentioning taking place in March is the Cineposible International Festival of Extremadura, with Mérida as one of the main places. In April, you can attend the European Greco-Roman Youth Theatre Festival, and music lovers can go to "Extremúsika," which is a mainly rock-oriented festival.
In July and August , the Festival of Mérida is held, a prestigious classical theater festival the hotel Blue Diamond City Mérida Palace closely collaborates with.
This is a metal music festival created in 2008 by the promotion company A Vallekas Producciones, held in a youth hostel “El Prado.”
The Mérida Fair is held during the first week of September. On the 8th of this month, Extremadura Day is celebrated.
On October 12, the Chinese Fair is held, a gypsy fair.
El Mes+corto (The Shortest Month) is an international audiovisual show Mérida participates in as one of its venues. It takes place in the month of October.
