Description The Fortaleza (Fortress) de San Felipe was erected in 1541 in the city of Puerto Plata. The Fortaleza de San Felipe Museum houses a collection of 18th to 19th century military artefacts. Constructed in stone, it operated as a prison on several occasions, and Juan Pablo Duarte was imprisoned there by the order of President Pedro Santana. The Fortaleza de San Felipe is the only evidence that remains of the 16th century city. Columbus discovered San Felipe de Puerto Plata on his first voyage, on 12th January 1493. On 4th October 1863, as a consequence of the War of Restoration against the Annexation to Spain, the city was burned down, and was rebuilt in 1865. The fortress remained as evidence of this barbarity. The city flourished again because of its excellent conditions as a port, which connected the entire Cibao region to the outside world.

Description The Puerto Plata Cable Car is a very interesting place where you can have an exciting adventure. The cable cars go towards the Loma Isabel de Torres in the tourism city of Puerto Plata. Travelling by cable car to some thousand metres altitude, you can see lush vegetation, while enjoying an unforgettable visit. Another spectacular view you get while travelling by cable car is the beautiful view of the coastal city of Puerto Plata. The statue of Cristo Redentor or Cristo de la Libertad is found on top of the Loma Isabel de Torres. The Puerto Plata cable car, which is the only one on the island of the Dominican Republic, was built in 1974.

Description Luperón is located in a wide bay, some 50 km to the west of Puerto Plata. It is mainly known for its sports harbour, Puerto Marina Blanca, located in the outskirts of the city. This location offers the perfect place for large ships and fishing boats, looking to explore the Dominican Republic a bit, to pick up supplies for the rest of the journey, or to seek peaceful shelter if there is a storm. It is beside the Atlantic Ocean, in an imposing bay, in which Admiral Christopher Columbus once stayed during the difficult storms typical of this area, which he called "Puerto de Gracias o Gracia", because it was the place where he sought shelter in order to save his fleet. The bay is surrounded by leafy, green mangroves. According to some historians of the area, the foundation of the town of Luperón dates back to the year 1863. We cannot give the exact day, as some writers allege, since nobody really knows when it was founded. The villages began to form slowly and sometimes took decades to become towns or cities.

Description Located 10 kilometres from Puerto Plata, it is one of the great wonders of this province. Damajagua is a geological fault that in one area the waters form a canyon several kilometres long, with parallel waterfalls of over eleven metres high. The falls begin at the summit of the Bajabonico hill, covering some 7 kilometres between the mountains; because of its beauty, it is one of the places in the Dominican Republic for adventure tourism. Another version says that the twenty-eight falls are formed by the descent of the River Damajagua, which flows from the Cordillera Septentrional, near the Amistad sugar mill, of Puerto Plata. There are twenty-eight waterfalls, which fall from different heights. It is said that there are falls of up to 13 metres altitude.
