Puerto Plata: Between treasures and pirates

The history of the Caribbean is full of legendary pirate tales, and one of the most fascinating is that of Roberto Cofresí, known as the “Robin Hood of the Caribbean.” His legacy remains alive in the memory of many regions, including Puerto Plata, where his story intertwines with the area’s natural beauty and cultural richness.

Who was Pirate Cofresí?

Roberto Cofresí y Ramírez de Arellano was born in Puerto Rico in 1791 and went on to become one of the most legendary figures in Caribbean piracy. It’s said that he raided merchant ships and shared part of his loot with the underprivileged, earning him the love and respect of many coastal communities. His daring life, filled with audacious feats that defied law and reason, came to an end in 1825, when the world’s leading nations united to capture him. After an unstoppable pursuit, he was eventually captured and executed in a dramatic turn of events in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Cofresí and his connection to Puerto Plata

The northern coast of the Dominican Republic is home to countless pirate tales, and Cofresí’s story stands out as one of the most intriguing. Just a few kilometers from Puerto Plata lies Cofresí Beach, named in honor of the famous corsair. According to legend, Cofresí used this area as a refuge and hideout, and it’s said that he buried a valuable treasure in the surrounding area, plundered from Spanish galleons laden with gold.

However, the story doesn’t end there. Allegedly, some of his own men tried to betray him and seize the treasure, but they were caught before they could escape. As punishment, Cofresí chained them to the very beach and executed them. Since then, many claim that on full moon nights, the sound of their chains rattling can still be heard—an eerie reminder of their tragic fate, lingering in the sea breeze.

Today, Cofresí Beach is a paradise destination that attracts visitors from around the world. Its crystal-clear waters and golden sand provide an ideal setting for relaxation and adventure. Additionally, nearby is Ocean World Adventure Park, a theme park where travelers can interact with marine life and enjoy a variety of water activities.
