The History of Puerto Plata’s Cable Car

No trip to Puerto Plata is complete without a ride on its iconic cable car, the only continuously operating one in the Caribbean since 1975. Designed by architect Cristian Martínez and brought to life with the expertise of Italian engineers, this remarkable mode of transport has been offering millions of visitors and locals alike the chance to soak in spectacular panoramic vistas while boosting the region’s tourism.

The Journey

The cable car ride lasts about 10 minutes, during which time visitors are gently lifted from the base station, located at sea level, up to the summit of Isabel de Torres Mountain, standing around 800 meters above. The open-design cabins provide an uninterrupted visual experience, allowing you to take in the stunning landscape from every angle.

Isabel de Torres Mountain

Upon reaching the top, you’ll find yourself in Isabel de Torres National Park, a protected area of significant ecological importance. The mountain is home to a rich biodiversity, featuring numerous species of flora and fauna. The highlight of the summit is the statue of Christ the Redeemer, a towering 16-meter sculpture that dominates the landscape, reminiscent of the famous Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro.

Botanical Garden

At the summit, you can also explore the incredible Botanical Garden, a peaceful sanctuary with trails winding through a diverse collection of tropical plants. This garden is the perfect spot to relax, snap photos, and learn more about the local flora.

Viewing Points and Trails

Isabel de Torres Mountain offers several viewpoints where you can take in breathtaking panoramas of Puerto Plata and its surroundings. From these vantage points, the city, beaches, and vast Atlantic Ocean are revealed in all their glory. For the more adventurous, there are several trails that allow you to explore the mountain on foot, providing a closer connection with nature.
