Best gourmet markets in Madrid

Madrid can boast from decades numerous markets with top quality food. However, in recent years, the concept of “market” as we know it has gone from being identified with the neighborhood markets to becoming trendy places where both tourists and locals want to go.

The markets of the capital have found innovative ways to keep up and adapt to the demands of gourmet citizens. They maintain culinary traditions while reinventing themselves by offering a more contemporary design in its facilities and being much more than a place to buy Spanish products.

You must visit some of our favorites at least once:

Mercado de San Miguel. A classic in the heart of Madrid.

In 2009, after extensive renovation, it reopened its doors with the aim of becoming the meeting point between the best professionals and gourmet lovers. As they state on their website: “Here the protagonist is not the Chef, but the material.”

Considered a site of cultural interest in the Monument categorf, it retains its original iron structure from the early XX century.

Today, it is not just a food market, but classic food stalls coexist here with bars dedicated to tasting products.

Mercado de San Ildefonso. Madrid’s first Street Market.

Recently opened and located in the lively neighborhood of Malasaña, it has 3 floors, two half covered terraces and 18 stalls with a varied cuisine. It also offers different events throughout the year such as book presentations, fashion shows, exhibitions, pop ups, showcookings …

Mercado de San Antón. The city’s most modern.

Located in the heart of Chueca district, it is one of the hottest markets right now. Here, tradition and the present merge. It has three different floors: on the first, there are stands with high quality products, tapas bars on the second, and on the top floor, a wonderful terrace and the restaurant “La Cocina de San Antón,” which is characterized by the fact that they can cook up the very same products you’ve just purchased in the market.

El huerto de Lucas. Organic Market.

Under the philosophy “medicine is food,” we find this traditional market where no chemistry us allowed. In all their stalls, they offer 100% organic quality. Everything is organic and environmentally friendly. And in the center of it all, opens a beautiful courtyard full of light and plants, where you can breathe peace.

A perfect place for those wanting to get away from the hustle and bustle of Madrid.
