Swim With Sea Turtles in Akumal
Start the day by heading to nearby Akumal to swim with sea turtles in their natural habitat near the second-largest barrier reef in the world. Akumal, a Mayan word meaning “the place of the turtles”, is a charming beach community. Expect to also see rays, crabs and many colorful fish while snorkeling here.
After your morning swim, head to a local restaurant to sample traditional and authentic Mexican food for lunch.
Explore an Underwater World at Rio Secreto
After lunch head to Rio Secreto, a natural underground river and limestone cavern system. Discovered in 2007, the cave is part of a 7.5-mile long network that is still being explored and mapped. Gear up with life jackets and headlamps for the guide-led tour.
While most underground caves like this are accessible only by trained spelunkers, since sections completely underwater require advanced diving equipment, Rio Secreto can be experienced on foot and while swimming safely in only a few hours.
