Playa del Carmen, a place kids love to visit again and again

Travelling with children always means more excitement and adventure, as well as more organisation and planning. To avoid hearing the all too common “I’m bored” or “this sucks”, it is best to establish a daily schedule for the kids that is also appealing for adults.

If you picked the right hotel, you will have plenty of activities to keep the whole family amused for a few hours each day. In Playa del Carmen, BlueBay Grand Esmeralda offers a programme of outdoor and poolside activities, with treasure hunts, a family sandcastle competition, inflatable water sports attractions, a tour of the lagoon, a mini circus and family cooking classes.

Along with other more light-hearted activities like beer ping pong or bingo, adults can choose from a wide range of sports activities such as stretching classes, water aerobics, dance classes, beach football, kayak races, etc.

Aside from the many activities at the hotel, Playa del Carmen also has many places worth visiting.

Here are some of the most complete and enjoyable options:

  • Visit Xel-Há Park: A theme park built around a natural inlet that is home to many marine animals. During your visit you can enjoy bike rides, zip lines, children’s pools with slides, and other activities, in addition to the breathtaking views of the Caribbean Sea from the top of the 40-metre-high lighthouse.

  • Spend the day at Paraíso Beach: This is the most popular tourist beach in Tulum. First and foremost, for the beauty of its water, which boasts a variety of beautiful blue colours, but also for its fine, white sandy beach. There are plenty of bars and restaurants, and it is also quite close to other tourist attractions like the archaeological area and several beautiful cenotes.

  • Children’s World (Xcaret Park): The popular Xcaret Park has a designated area for kids under 12 years of age. With countless slides, tunnels, hanging bridges, and labyrinths surrounded by nature, your kids will enjoy endless hours of entertainment. There is also a wading pool, a sandpit and a fountain with water jets for children under 6 years old.

  • Buggy tours: For the more adventurous kids. Many companies offer buggy rides to discover the beauty of the jungle and the Mayan villages. A perfect plan for all the family.

  • Swim with whale sharks: It might sound dangerous, but it is totally safe and controlled. If your kids love the underwater world, there is nothing better than snorkelling among these huge, yet harmless, marine mammals. Several companies in the area offer this unique experience, and it usually comes with lunch included.
