What to see on a 3-day break in Gran Canaria

Summer is now just a fond memory. We have already returned to the routine of the alarm clock, hustle and bustle, the office…but no evil lasts a hundred years.

A well-planned break will provide you with a breath of fresh air and help you get through the day with more energy. And what better destination than the sunny Canary Islands?

Mild temperatures are guaranteed all year round, allowing you to take a refreshing dip in the sea and feel the summer again.

Day 1

On the first day, you could visit the Maspalomas Dunes situated in the south of the island. It is a protected area of 5 square kilometres. The dunes are said to have acquired their present-day form from an earthquake that took place in 1755. Well worth a visit for its natural beauty, although we recommend going well-equipped and with plenty of water.

Close to the dunes, you have Playa del Inglés, an immense beach with plenty of space for families, nudists and surfers. With almost three kilometres of sand and many services and restaurants, this is a great spot to spend a few hours.

In the south, we also recommend visiting Puerto de Mogán, a quiet, picturesque fishing neighbourhood with impressive architectural features. A welcoming place, easy to visit and well worth taking a few photos of its colourful streets full of flowers and the small boats in the calm waters of the harbour.

Day 2

On your second day, take the opportunity to discover the north of the island. One of the most beautiful spots in the north is the village of Arucas. The historic centre boasts architectural gems like the neo-Gothic styled Church of San Juan Baptista. Arucas is also considered the birthplace of Canary Island rum, so make sure to visit the distillery and see the rum production process first-hand.

Another of the most picturesque villages in the north of Gran Canaria is Firgas, famous for its production of sparkling mineral water. Hiking is one of the most popular activities in this area, with many nearby forests and ravines to explore. Paseo de Canarias also attract a lot of visitors thanks to its 30-metre-high waterfall and the relief models representing all the different islands.

No journey to Gran Canaria is complete without visiting the Cueva Pintada de Gáldar. An archaeological museum and park where you can admire painted murals and artistic expressions from the Canarian aborigines and learn more about how the pre-Hispanic cultures lived.

Day 3

Day three should be devoted to the capital, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, which was founded some five hundred years ago. The neighbourhoods of Vegueta and Triana make up the old part of the city. Casa de Colón, one of the most emblematic buildings on the island, is also well worth a visit, more than 500 years old, it houses a museum where the history of the city is revealed.  Vegueta is also home to the Gran Canaria Cathedral in Plaza de Santa Ana, and is considered the Canary Islands’ most important religious architectural monument.

We also recommend visiting the Vergueta Market to sample some of the fresh products on offer and regain your strength after walking around the old town.

From the pedestrian streets of Vergueta, you will arrive in the Triana neighbourhood. The neighbourhood’s main street and surroundings have preserved the old facades, traditional wooden windows and Canarian balconies, and there are many small traditional shops and restaurants to check out.

By now, you are probably already packing your bags. Now that you know the best spots to visit, we should also tell you the best place to stay.  BlueBay Beach Club****, a hotel with one and two-bedroom fully equipped apartments offering you the independence and comfort you are looking for, is just 10 kilometres from Maspalomas beach.
