Today, we are going to tell you one of the region’s most intriguing legends: The Legend of the Mayan Alux’ob.
The mystery of the Alux’ob.
In Mayan folklore, the Alux’ob are considered spiritual beings that inhabit the forests and cenotes of the region. These small, elf-like creatures are believed to act as guardians of nature and the land, protecting hidden treasure in the jungle. Legend has it that if you are going to plant some seeds, grow something or build a house you should prepare an offering to appease them. And if you don’t, or disrespect them, legends say they become mischievous. Depending on how they are treated, the Alux’ob are said to be capable of both positive and negative interactions with humans. Those who show respect for nature are cool, but those who don’t can expect mischief.
To this day, locals and faithful believers partake in rituals guided by Mayan priests, where a figure of clay, wood or other material is offered to the person who will be their master in the coming years to protect their home and harvest.
Once the person has possession of the figure, they take it to the fields and presents it to the gods. And after it is hidden close to its master so that it can come alive at night and protect the house from intruders. From then on, the Alux must be fed and content with the offerings his master accepted in the ritual. And after seven years the Alux’s soul must be freed to return to the jungle or wherever it belongs.
