A taste of México

There is no denying that when we travel, we tend to forget about diets and daily exercise and indulge in the joys of delicious food and cocktails to satisfy our stomachs.

Travelling is more than just discovering new places. It is also about getting to know the culinary delights of the area we visit.

Mexico is particularly rich in gastronomic culture with spices, hot sauces, meats and fish (in many cases raw).

One of the most typical dishes is Cochinita Pibil. This tasty slow-roasted pork dish marries the meat in a red spice called achiote and is served with red onion and habanero chilli sauce. We recommend ordering it on the side as it may be too spicy for some stomachs.

Another dish that will surprise you is Sopa de lima (lime soup). This is a typical Mexican dish that has been enjoyed for many, many years by locals and is well worth trying. Apart from lime juice, the soup’s main ingredients include chicken breast, tomato, onion, oregano, and corn tortillas.

Our list of Mexican specialities includes one of the most international dishes, the world-famous Tacos. A simple yet tasty dish consisting of corn-based tortilla topped with a filling of chicken, beef or marinated pork. Typically seasoned with pico de gallo and we recommend adding a generous splash of lime juice on top.

Salbutes are another speciality from the Yucatan peninsula that is also made from corn tortillas. Salbuts are fried in oil or pork fat and topped with turkey or chicken, onion, tomato, lettuce and avocado.

These are all typical Mexican dishes that can be found in restaurants or in street-food stalls that prepare them on the spot. But Mexican cuisine also has more elaborate dishes that are well worth trying.

We know that having so much to choose from can be daunting so we are going to recommend just one place where you can enjoy these and many more Mexican and international dishes.

BlueBay Grand Esmeralda hotel boasts a selection of à la carte restaurants to suit all tastes. Don Isi serves regional Mexican specialities, while JaalHa has a buffet and specialises in meat, fish and seafood.
